Kos / Mastichari: The kitespot for beginners, intermediates & families in Greece

+ Our own KitewWorldWide House
+ Premium focused lessons from a boat to ensure fast progression
+ Wind season runs from April to the end of October
+ Family-friendly spot, lots of other stuff to do
+ Mastichari is a small village with a local feel
+ Cheap flights

Kos is one of the only Greek island where the conditions are great for beginners as well as more advanced kiters.

Our colleague and team rider Anne discovered Mastichari on the island Kos a few years ago when she spent a couple of seasons on the island. She therefore has the insiders knowledge on all of the kite spots and has kited everywhere possible on the island!

The kiteschool is located on the wide sandy beach of Mastichari. The school is VDWS licensed and operates under German management and ownership. Stefan and his team have been athletes on the water for almost all theirs lives and they live the Greek hospitality to the fullest.

They developed a special and exceptionally secure schooling system, which combines professional training via boat with semi-private classes (a maximum of two students per instructor). This enables fast progression on the water as well as a high level of safety and of course a lot of fun.

The little fishing village of Mastichari, has a real local feel and is away from the mass tourism which is prevalent in other parts of the island. There are lots of taverna’s offering delicious food and the unique Greek hospitality.

Our Kite House is conveniently located a few minutes walk from the kite spot and the town so you can walk everywhere. The house has 8 separate studios each with their own little balcony so you can have your own space, as well as join the group. We all come together for breakfast before we head to the beach for a day of kiting, the end of the day normally ends with a drink or two at the beach bar or by the shared pool to celebrate another good day. We have our own KiteWorldWide guide on site, like in all our other destinations to show you the best restaurants, kite spots and other sights in Mastichari.

For families this is also a great location, you have a big sandy beach right in front of the kite spots which is perfect for children to play, they could even learn how to windsurf or stand up paddle from our centre

The windy season runs from April until the end of October and therefore longer than you might think, even at the beginning or the end of the season the weather is warm and sunny.

On top of all the good news, you will find cheap flights to Kos departing several days per week with Ryan Air or Easyjet as well as many of the bigger tour operators. The transfer from the airport is only a short 20-minute drive away from the Kite House.

Kitesurfing in Greece

The spot for beginners on Kos

The kitesurf spot in Mastichari on the island of Kos is brilliant for beginners due to the unique concept of learning from a boat as well as the constant wind and Mediterranean sea which is pretty much flat. The spot is located directly on a wide sandy beach and offers a 400-meter area for your exclusive entrance.

For intermediate and advanced kiters you have a lot of space to enjoy your freedom as well as progress and learn a new trick or skill. However, if there is onshore wind you may need to body drag a few meters to start your session or if you would prefer we also run a water taxi service.

There are also numerous other spots which you can discover, we offer a free shuttle service to the other spots on the islands if there is no wind in Mastichari. We can also organise day trips to different spots for you and your family if you would like.

Wind info

The wind on and around Kos is dominated by two different wind systems: The north wind known as Meltemi, which depends on the general weather situation and the daily produced thermal winds, caused by the nearby Turkish mainland.

The Meltemi is a strong and constant north wind, which makes for perfect side-shore conditions on our main spot Mastichari the whole day during the summer months. As soon as the wind forecast projects northern directions you can normally add a couple of knots. In Mastichari the wind hits the spot without being hindered, however (luckily) quite constant and generally not with more than 6Bft. Thus, here the beginners and intermediates are spared for the rough conditions that typically prevail at many other Greek spots.

Next to the Meltemi, Kos is affected by the daily thermal west wind. The thermal wind is generated throughout the day and caused by the rapid heating of air masses over the nearby dry landmasses of Turkey.

Depending on the strength of the Meltemi, it normally gets distracted in the afternoon and turns from north to northwest or west. So, on days without Meltemi you still have a good chance at westerly thermal winds in the afternoon, which produces perfect, constant winds from 15 to 20 knots for beginners and intermediates.

For advanced kitesurfers, it clearly is important to know where to go on which day, as the wind can be very different from spot to spot.

Local circumstances

Another factor influencing the wind are the two islands located just some kilometers north of Kos. Between the islands the wind is being funneled, which causes a jet effect having different strengths of wind on certain spots of the island.

During the change from north to north west wind a short wind break might occur, also in Mastichari. Consequently, you often have two sessions a day, one in the morning with side-shore conditions and one in the afternoon once the thermal winds have kicked in.

Kite spots on Kos in Greece

Advanced kite spot Kohilari

The Kohilari spot is about 30 minutes away from Mastichari. Here you can kite the biggest waves on Kos or improve your freestyle skills in the shallow water.
Our converted fire truck takes you directly to the spot. The truck is equipped with a pergola for a shady spot, fresh water for a short shower after the kite session and a fridge for your drinks and snacks. In the rental pool you will find as usual the latest equipment from Naish and Cabrinha, but there is also plenty of storage space.

Advanced kite spot Marmari (North beach)

The funnel between the two islands north of Kos accelerates the flow of the Meltemi wind and often makes for days with more than 6Bft. Due to beach erosion over the last years, there is unfortunately not much space here. However, the water is very shallow for at least 50 Metres. The spot in generally can be quite busy, especially during the high season, There are three large hotel facilities close by.

Advanced kite spot Marmari (Salt lake)

This spot is located a little further east of Marmari with similar conditions like at the North beach. The beach is wider and the spot is generally quite empty.  You wil find a splendid back drop and friendly local Flamingos!

Windsurf and strong wind spot Psalidi

This spot offers perfect conditions for windsurfers particularly looking for strong winds, it can be gusty at this spot. The Meltemi is accelerated between the mountains of Kos and nearby Turkey and blows side-offshore. Advanced kiters, who find their way to this spot, should be aware of  the many boats in about a 1-1.5 km distance. Don’t go too far out! We do not recommend this spot for beginners.
