The best kitespots for kitesurfing in Cape Town

Cape Town and its surroundings are the absolute Mecca for kiters. Here everybody will definitely get his money’s worth. Do you want to learn to kitesurf first, push yourself to the next level, or plunge into the next wave? All this is possible with kitesurfing in Cape Town.

Kitesurfing at Sunset Beach

The Sunset Beach in Cape Town is our Homespot and is located directly at our KiteWorldWide Mansion Cape Town.
This beach is the beginning of a 10km long stretch of coast and is kiteable over the whole length. Sunset Beach is first class with clean waves and a lot of space so that nobody gets in the way. Sunset Beach is perfect for wave lovers and freestylers and makes kitesurfing in Cape Town an absolute pleasure.

Kitespot Table View

With a fantastic view of Table Mountain, you will find a sandy beach and waves, some of which can be a bit higher – this spot is therefore not suitable for beginners.
Except for a shipwreck you have no obstacles here. There are several cafés and restaurants directly at the spot.

Kitesurfing in Big Bay

This sandy beach is about 25 minutes from Cape Town and attracts many surfers and freestylers. Here the waves break between two rock formations and offer the perfect “playground”.
The wind sets in here about one hour later than at our Homespot Sunset Beach. There are many restaurants and cafés in the immediate vicinity.

Kitesurfing at Blouberg Beach

This stretch of coast is about 3km long and only suitable for advanced kiters. You will also find plenty of surf shops here, which will make the kiter’s heart beat faster.

Kitesurfing in Haakgat

Only very experienced kiters should go on the water in Haakgat. It is a very challenging spot, where it is not unusual to find waves up to 6m high. But even for rather inexperienced kiters the trip is worthwhile, because watching the kiters at this spot is simply impressive. But be sure to pack yourself some food, because there are no localities here.

Kitesurfing at Sommerset Beach

About 40 minutes away from Cape Town you have the Sommerset Beach – a spacious spot, which is equally suitable for beginners and professionals. Especially freestylers get their money’s worth here. The thermals are often still strong at this spot – which guarantees fun on the water. There are even showers and toilets directly on the beach.

Kitespot Platboom Beach

This wave spot is located about 1.5 hours from Cape Town directly in a nature reserve. Even for non-kiters this spot is worth a visit, because the turquoise water and the white sandy beach seem almost paradise.
Toilets are available, but you should pack your own provisions. But take good care of your food, the little monkeys in the nature reserve can sometimes get pretty cheeky!

Kiting at Dolphin Beach

The Dolphin Beach offers an incredible amount of space for kiting, as well as for launching and landing. There are also some waves here, but they are very clear and mostly not so big, so this spot is also suitable for beginners on calm days.

Kitesurfing in Langebaan

A huge lagoon is waiting for you in Langebaan, about one hour from Cape Town. Beside the fantastic blue water you even have a shallow water area, which is divided into three areas. This is a real rarity in the Cape Town area and together with the high wind probability and moderate conditions makes this spot perfect for beginners and freestylers.
Directly on the beach there are numerous restaurants which are waiting for you with delicious food after the kite session. There are also showers and toilets directly at the spot – what more do you need when kiting in Cape Town?

Downwind tour along the coast of Cape Town

With the Downwinder you start directly at our homespot at Sunset Beach and then kite past Dolphin Beach and Blouberg Beach to Table View. The best thing about it: You can concentrate on every single wave and jump, because you don’t have to worry about the height.

Weather and kite conditions for kitesurfing in Cape Town

The climate in Cape Town is pleasantly warm, so you can walk around in your T-shirt at any time. However, the water is relatively cool – so you will definitely need a wetsuit.

WIND CONDITIONS

From spring (September) until late summer (April), the South-Easter, also known as the “Cape Doctor”, roams through Cape Town. This is the local name for the strong south-easterly wind that kitesurfers in Cape Town love so much.
Also thanks to the Cape Doctor’s consistency, Cape Town has become a real kitesurfing Mecca during the summer months. One of the world’s top kitesurfing destinations, not only for kitesurfing professionals. Also for those who want to make progress in wave kiting and love the constant wind of Cape Town. BTW: The Cape Doctor also provides the famous tablecloth on Table Mountain.

KITE SIZE

In Cape Town kite sizes around 6-12 sqm2 are mostly used. Of course it always depends on the kiter and the conditions.

RAIN

Rainfall in Cape Town is extremely low and you can almost always enjoy dry weather.

During your stay we will take you to the different kite spots and also take care of the airport transfer.
Directly in Cape Town there is a Hop-On Hopp-Off Bus, which will take you anywhere in the city. If you want to go on a trip on your own, a rental car is recommended. You will need a valid driving licence.
The European driving licence is accepted in most cases. However, for insurance reasons, you should rather have an international driving licence with you.

What does a typical day of kitesurfing in Cape Town look like?

As at many kitesurfing spots the wind does not set in until the morning. So you can sleep late in the morning and start the day in a very relaxed way. At our home spot on Sunset Beach the wind sets in first and moves up the coast later, but the wind tends to decrease from south to north. During the day, the wind is further strengthened by the thermals, which makes kitesurfing in Cape Town even more challenging.

Once the wind is there, of course, it goes straight to the water. Either directly at our Sunset Beach or we will take you to one of the many kitespots that Cape Town has to offer.

And of course we will kite until the last ray of sunshine! In the evening we cook with you in the Mansion and chill on the roof terrace or drive into the city. No matter if it is a relaxed evening in the Mansion or a party night – there is something for everyone.

WHY GO TO CAPE TOWN WITH KITEWORLDWIDE?

The team of KiteboardingEvents is available to all guests for intensive, round-the-clock support on site in Cape Town. They know every corner and hidden spot around Cape Town. They can not only tell you where to go kiting in which wind direction, but also help you to get the most out of your stay. Regular downwinder shuttles and downwind trips along Cape Town’s coast are an absolute must.

We regularly plan and undertake exciting activities and excursions around Cape Town with you. This is not only good for you, but also for your non-kiting companions, who can also have a lot of fun in Cape Town! For the morning programme when the wind is still too light to kite or for the few days without wind, we organise surf trips around Cape Town.

RED BULL KING OF THE AIR IN CAPE TOWN

Only a few kilometres from the KiteWorldWide Mansion the Red Bull King of the Air takes place and is THE kite building event of the year. This is where the world’s best kiteboarders meet and show what they can do.
The principle is simple: the kiter who jumps the highest and does lots of cool tricks wins!
In theory, anyone can take part in this contest, so even amateurs have a chance to win the title. From 2020 on, the gender of the participants will no longer play a role – so even women will be able to show off their skills!
Even non-kiters will be thrilled by this event. Apart from the impressive sporting achievements, the atmosphere at this event is something very special and for this reason alone the Red Bull King of the Air in Cape Town is worth a visit!

General information

Cape Town is more of a destination for advanced kiters. But there are also some spots which are suitable for beginners and we will of course visit them with you!

Anyone can learn kitesurfing. The age is not important, neither is the fitness level or weight. We have the right equipment for everyone, which will be individually adjusted to you.

By the way, kitesurfing is not as exhausting as many fear. The pull of the kite is not held in your hands, but is transferred to the harness, which you wear around your hips.

Of course! We have a huge pool of material stored in the Mansion. Should you need any of it, please do not hesitate to contact us!

The official language is Afrikaan, but English is spoken everywhere. This makes everyday life a lot easier and the journey more pleasant!

Yes and no. Cape Town is in the CET +1 zone and is therefore one hour ahead of us during our winter. However, the time difference cancels itself out in our summer time, as Cape Town does not change its clocks. Jet lag is a no-go!

A credit card is also always recommended when travelling outside Europe. Some banks, such as Comdirect and DKB, do not charge you any fees for using your card abroad. Card payment is considered extremely safe and is very welcome in Cape Town!

A few banks do not accept certain credit cards – so you should always carry a second one. For example, you can bring a Visa and a MasterCard, one of the two credit cards will always work.

You can use your credit card to withdraw money from one of the many ATMs. There are cash dispensers on every corner! If you bring cash into the country, you can of course exchange it for the appropriate currency at a bureau de change – but be very careful when recounting!

We would advise against traveller’s cheques. They are relatively expensive and difficult to cash.

There is a Woolworth in the immediate vicinity of the Mansion. Do you want to refill your fridge in the accommodation or have you forgotten something? At Woolworth’s you will find everything!

Yes, there are sharks in Cape Town. But we have never met one before. Also, you are on and not in the water when you are kiting and you are moving quite fast, so the risk is very low.

By the way, there are shark spotter at many spots. They do nothing else all day long but search the coasts for sharks and if necessary sound the alarm.

Yes, in the low season our Mansion is of course also available for you. Just contact our sales team.
