Kos is not only an exciting destination for kitesurfing in Greece. It is also a great place for families. This combination makes it the perfect family destination. And the crowning glory is that you can finally book one of the most beautiful family hotels on the island with us – right on the windiest kite spot on the island. The holiday resort Marmari is known for its strong and reliable winds. Because of the two islands, which are located 8km offshore, the Meltemi (the north-west wind) is generated by the jet effect. It accelerates and then hits the spot more strongly. Especially among windsurfers, Marmari has been known for a long time, a cult surf spot so to speak. Among kitesurfers still rather unknown.

Marmari has grown from a small village with fishing and agriculture to a holiday destination. On the beautiful sandy beach of Marmari on Kos you will find the professional VDWS kite school under German management. Stefan and his team have been water sportsmen all their lives and live the Greek hospitality. They have developed a very special and especially safe training system, which combines professional boat training with semi-private lessons in small groups of maximum two students. This guarantees maximum learning success and fun!

Especially for families the spot in Marmari is perfect! The family friendly accommodation, the Caravia Beach Hotel is one of the best and most beautiful hotels in Marmari and only 350m from the kite school. Here on the big sandy beach you can go kiting and your kids can even take a windsurfing course at the same spot, the season is from April to the end of September and you can always surf in the warm water in the absolute sunshine.

In addition, there are very cheap flights, usually several days a week from all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The airport transfer takes only 20 minutes!

Kitesurfing in Greece on Kos

The best kitesurfing conditions in Kos

If you go kitesurfing in Marmari with north to northwest wind, you will find the best kitesurfing conditions on the island. Due to the two offshore islands of Kalimnos and Pserimos, the Meltemi (north-west wind) between the islands is amplified by the jet effect and then hits the kitespot directly and accelerated. Until sunset the wind allows perfect kite sessions with 1-1,5m waves and little current.

The kite school is located right in front of the Caravia Beach Hotel on the fine sandy beach. With their boat training the team of the kite school makes sure that you can spend more time on the water. Instead of having to walk slowly and tediously after each bodydrag, you will be brought back to your starting point quickly and easily by boat. More time on the water = faster learning success with kiting.

Should the wind in Marmari not be enough, you don’t have to despair immediately, because there is a shuttle “to the wind”! The kite school will take you to one of their locations on the island for free. Because there is always a place where the wind blows.

If you want to take a kitesurfing course in Kos, please have a look at our Learn Kitesurfing page.

More kitespots on Kos in Greece

Beginner: kitespot Mastichari

The professional kite school and the constant wind offer perfect conditions to learn or improve kitesurfing in Greece. However, you have to expect that you will have to body-drag out in onshore wind. The kitesurfing school is located on the wide sandy beach and offers its own 400m wide boarding area. Only a few minutes walking distance from the kitespot and even less from the center is our own accommodation in the typical KiteWorldWide style.

Intermediate/Advanced: kitespot Kohilari

The spot of Kohilari is about 30 minutes away from Mastichari. Here you can catch the biggest waves on Kos or improve your freestyle skills in the flat water between the waves.
Our converted fire truck will bring you right to the spot. The truck is equipped with a pergola for a shady spot, fresh water for a short shower after the kite session and a fridge for your drinks and snacks. In the rental pool you will find the latest kite equipment from Naish, Cabrinha and SU-2, but there is also enough storage space to bring your own stuff.

Intermediate/Advanced: kitespot Marmari Salzsee

A little further east of Marmari is another spot. Here you have a little more space, because in the backcountry there is a big salt lake instead of the hotels. The wind is similar here.

Intermediate/Advanced: windsurf and strong wind Kitespot Psalidi

This spot offers perfect conditions for windsurfers who are looking for particularly strong winds and for whom gusty winds are no problem. The Meltemi is strengthened here by the mountains of Kos and blows obliquely offshore. Advanced surfers who get lost at this spot should watch out for the many boats in about 1-1.5 km distance from the spot and don’t go out too far. We do not recommend this spot to kite beginners.

Information about Kitesurfing in Greece

Kitesurfing in Marmari on Kos

The wind on and around Kos is dominated by two different wind systems. The north wind Meltemi, which is dependent on the general weather conditions, and the daily thermals generated by the nearby Turkish mainland.

The Meltemi is a very steady and strong north wind during the summer months, which blows side-shore at the kite spot in Marmari. Due to the two offshore islands, the wind is getting stronger and as soon as the northern winds are announced, you can add some knots to the wind forecast.

Additionally, a westerly wind thermal builds up during the day. This is caused by the faster warming of the air masses above the nearby dry land mass of Turkey. So you often have two sessions a day, one with north wind in the morning and one session in the afternoon with northwest wind.

Depending on how strong the Meltemi is, it is deflected to northwest to west during the afternoon. On days without Meltemi you still have a good chance of westerly thermals in the afternoon, which produce perfect, constant winds of 15 to 20 knots for beginners and intermediates.
