The hype around wave kite surfing is really just getting started.  2011 was the first year that the KSP – a competition world cup tour devoted completely to wave kitesurfing – with the finals being held in Sal. We want to give you a closer look at wave kitesurfing on Sal, since you can progress much faster with a few tips and tricks and kitesurfing in the waves is much safer under guidance.

Together with THE wave kitesurfer and wave world champion Mitu Monteiro we have set up a program especially for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers who want to kitesurf in some of the best kite waves on offer.

The kitecenter of Mitu and his buddy Djo is located right at Kitebeach, the perfect spot for wavekite beginners.  The center used to be a small beach hut but has since gone through a complete renovation to be a really stylish, fully equipped kite center including an awesome beach bar to hang out in.

We are offering one-week long kitesurf camps with Mitu Monteiro, including five days of intensive wave training and spot guiding.  Mitu will personally be in charge of your progress and learning success in the waves and take you to those secret spots that only the locals know about.

Since numbers for the camp are limited (6 kitesurfers), we advise that you book early.  Dates for the upcoming wave camps will be there soon.

For those of you who want to give it a try and generally feel comfortable on a twin tip, but don’t want to buy a waveboard just yet, we offer a wave basic package.  Of course there are a lot more travel packages for beginners and advanced kitesurfers as well as for your non-kiting companions. Just have a look under the kite surf holiday destinations tab for Cape Verde to find your perfect combination.

Dates and schedule of the Wave Camps

Wave camp schedule

Day 1
The night before your first ‘Wave Camp’ Day, you will meet up with Mitu and the rest of the group at a nice welcome-dinner at a lovely beach bar.  You will get to know Mitu and have the time and opportunity to discuss the plan for the rest of the week and chat about kitesurfing.

Day 2
On the first day, you’ll head to the Kite Beach and get some of your first tips from the wave pro on how to use the board.  Mitu will also check out how good you are on your board to determine which spots to take you to.

Depending on the wind, swell, your ability and personal wishes, Mitu will take you to the secret spots on the island in an all-terrain pickup. Just so you know: no one knows their way around here as well as Mitu!

Throughout the week, you will have a great dinner with local specialties and lots of fish (other alternatives also possible) in a sweet beach restaurant (drinks not included ). Your meal, the long day of amazing kitesurfing and the caipis at the beach bar afterwards will tire you out and help you dream about your next kitesurfing day on these amazing waves on Sal Island.

We recommend that you arrive a few days ahead of the camp to get warmed up and ready for action. Kitesurf and spots on Sal

If you know where to go, you’ll discover an astounding array of different kitesurfing spots.

There are spots with side-onshore wind and small wind waves for intermediate kiters on the windward eastern side of the island. This is also where you’ll find the so-called Kite Beach and the new and stylish kite school of Mitu and Djo.

The spot Santa Maria in the south is a great, nearly perfect, beginner cove with flat water, so even freestyle kiters get their money’s worth. At the western part of Santa Maria is where you find Mitu and Djo’s professional kitesurfing school. This is also the only place in the bay of Santa Maria where you can kitesurf, as the wind comes in side-shore to side-onshore.

At the western corner of the bay, there is also an excellent wave spot. This is only recommended for experienced kitesurfers, as the wind blows offshore. Those who don’t want to tackle the waves in Ponta Preta at the western part of the island, should still come and check out this spot and watch the pros ripping it out in the waves.

It´s Mitu’s secret to which of these spots he will take you, one thing is for sure you are in good hands with Mitu, know body knows this place better than he does!

In order to start your day ready for some serious sessions on the water we make sure you have a huge breakfast on the ground floor of the main house.  There you can already make plans for the day with all the other guests while enjoying your Fantastically tasty and nutritious breakfast.

Each room is equipped with a comfortable double or twin bed, as well as a spacious wardrobe, a private bathroom with warm water shower, a mini-safe and a fan. Just like the penthouse in the side building, the apartment in the main building is the highlight of the Kite House. Alternative Activities

At this point we’d like to give you a little overview over alternative activities that you can do on site.  The main activity on the island is definitively kitesurfing but Sal also has many over activities on offer.

General Information

The island Sal and the locals

The Cape Verde islands were accidentally discovered by Portuguese seafarers back in the 1500s. Cabo Verde means : the islands of the green cape. But the “green cape“ actually referred to todays Senegal, to which the islands belonged. This explains why the islands aren’r really green, which would have justified their name.
The republic of Cape Verde consists of 10 islands that are partially occupied. They are the most southern archipelago of the North-african group of islands. They emerged out of volcanic activities and can be divided into Sotavento (turning their back to the wind) and Barlavento (facing the wind) islands.

Through the fusion between different cultures and languages of European and African island habitants, unique culture and dialect, called Creole, evolved. The Cape Verdeans developed their own identity through this.

Sal: „the island of salt“ belongs to the Barlavento-islands and is located at the north east border of the archipelago. The name came up when back in the 17th century the island got occupied for salt extraction.

Stress and rush is something Cape Verdeans don’t know much about and you’ll get to hear “não problema“ (no problem) and “um moment“ (just a moment) often. The saying: “The European people have the watches and the African people have the time“ is absolutely suited to Cape Verde. Get into this relaxed atmosphere of the island. Explore and enjoy the flair that comes along with this relaxed attitude from the locals.

You will be absolutely stoked from all the adventure sports available here on the island, which will give you a huge appetite to keep your energy levels up for more and more action.  The Cape Verdean kitchen will keep your energy levels up and have you begging for more with its tasty and rustic food.

In Sal all the fish lovers are going to get their money’s worth with tuna, mackerels, squid, langoustine, shells, crabs – just to name a few. They get cooked, grilled or fried and served freshly all over the island. There are also plenty of meat and Vegeterian options available.
