+ Learn how to kite surf with the world champion Mitu Monteiro
+ Stylish kiteschool located directly at the Kitebeach
+ Explore hidden kitespots that no one else knows
+ Wave beginner package

The hype around wave kite surfing is really just getting started. 2011 was the first year that the KSP – a competition world cup tour devoted completely to wave kitesurfing – with the finals being held on Sal. We want to give you a closer look at wave kitesurfing on Sal, since you can progress much faster with a few tips and tricks and kitesurfing in the waves is much safer under guidance.

Together with THE wave kitesurfer and wave world champion Mitu Monteiro we have set up a program especially for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers who want to kitesurf on waves for real.

The kitecenter of Mitu and his buddy Djo is located right at Kitebeach, the perfect spot for wavekite beginners. The center used to be a small beach hut but has been completely renovated to be a really stylish, fully equipped kite center including a nice beach bar.

We are offering one-week long kitesurf camps with Mitu Monteiro, including five days of intensive wave training and spot guiding. Mitu will personally be in charge of your progress and learning success in the waves and take you to those secret spots hidden for the “normal” kitesurfer.

Since numbers for the camp are limited (6 kitesurfers), we advise that you book early. Dates for the upcoming wave camps will be there soon.

For those of you who want to give it a try and generally feel comfortable on a twin tip, but don’t want to buy a waveboard just yet, we offer a wave basic package for all wave newcomers. Of course there are a lot more travel packages for beginners and advanced kitesurfers as well as for your non-kiting companion. Just have a look at our general Cape Verde site to find your perfect combination.

Dates and schedule of the Wave Camps

Wave camp schedule

Day 1
The night before your first Wave Camp Day, you’ll meet up with Mitu and the rest of the group at a nice welcome-dinner at a beach bar. You’ll get to know Mitu and have the time and opportunity to discuss the plan for the rest of the week and chat about kitesurfing.

Day 2
On the first day, you’ll head to the Kite Beach and get some of your first tips from the wave pro on how to use the board. Mitu will also check out how good you are on your board to determine which spots to take you to.

Day 3-6
Depending on the wind, swell, your ability and personal wishes, Mitu will take you to the secret spots on the island in an all-terrain pickup. Just so you know: no one knows their way around here as well as Mitu!

Throughout the week, you’ll have a great dinner with typical local specialties and lots of fish (other alternatives also possible) in a sweet beach restaurant (drinks not included ). This is a beach BBQ. Your meal, the long day of kitesurfing and the caipis at the beach bar afterwards will tire you out and let you dream about your next kitesurfing day on the waves.

We recommend to book and arrive some days ahead of the camp to get warm and ready on the water. If you have never tried a wave board before, you should book the wave intro course. You can also plan stays before and after your wave kite Camp, we will happily organise the accommodation and everything else needed.

The camp includes one week at the KiteWorldWide Kite House, 5-day intensive wave kitesurfing training with Mitu, F-One Wave Board test, a wave board for 4 hrs per day, transportation to and from the airport, spot guiding and transportation to the wave spots on the island during the 5 days, beach barbeque, F-One Kite test option, welcome get together and briefing for the week;)

Kitesurf and spots on Sal

The choices of kitesurfing spots are astounding if you know where to go.

In the western part of the island you can find numerous wavespots.

In the bay of Baia da Murdeira you’ll find the spots Calhita Funda, Rife and Praia da Canoa. Baia de Joaquim Petinha is another spot to kitesurf in the waves.

For the more adventurous, there are world-class wave spots – most of all, the waves at Ponta Preta as you may know from the tons of videos. The waves here are very fast and have been known to have wave faces up to eight meters on big days. Those who don’t feel fit enough for the waves in Ponta Preta, should still check out this spot and watch the pros ripping the waves.

There are spots with side-onshore wind and small wind waves for intermediate kiters on the eastern, windward side of the island. This is also where you’ll find the so-called Kite Beach.

Santa Maria in the south is a great beginner cove with flat water, so even freestyle kitesurfers get their money’s worth. The western part of Santa Maria is also where Mitu and Djo’s professional kitesurf school is located. There you’ll find a large assortment of new F-One kite equipment. On the southwestern corner of the bay, there is also an excellent wave spot which is only recommended for those who can really kitesurf due to the offshore wind.

It´s Mitu’s secret to which of these spots he will take you.

Dates 2017

Dates in April:

ampel-orange 08.01. – 12.01.2018

Caution: The spots we use during the wave camps are only for advanced kitesurfers. You should already be able to kitesurf upwind and do a quick and controlled relaunch of the kite. Other requirements are simple jibing and switch riding. Please understand that the group cannot make allowances for kitesurfers who do not handle these maneuvers.

Welcome to the Kitesurf Island Sal

If you decide to travel with us, we don’t only book your flight and accommodation, our packages always consists of the daily transfer to the kite beach, kite-storage and launch/land service, as well as a general on site care and guidance by our english speaking KiteWorldWide team. Moreover, to round the experience off, we organize a weekly beach-bbq for all our guests.

For a long time we have been looking for the perfect accommodation in on Sal and now finally we can call this kitesurfer jewel ours.

The KiteWorldWide Kite House

Not without any reason the building owners call the former „Turtle House“ their oeuvre. The unique style of the accommodation is shown in every detail and each centimeter is affectionately elaborated. Trough this individual design and the consistent planting the Kite House offers a unique flair.

You life together with likeminded people from all over the world. Relax after a long day full of sessions in the lounge, the rooftop terrace with few to the spot or any of the other community areas and let the day draw to an end with one or two glasses of wine. Or you cook together in the shared kitchen – because four rooms are sharing one kitchen and a lounge area: perfect for some cooking sessions or kitchen parties“ Of course you don’t have to step down for comfort – the Kite House offers solid European standard.

Rooms

Each room is equipped with a comfortable double or twin bed, as well as spacious wardrobe and a private bathroom with warm water shower. Furthermore each room is designed in another, individual theme. Always four rooms share one kitchen and lounge area.

In addition, for the Kiteboarding Events we offer „shared rooms“, which means you share a double room with another participant. Therefore you can save money and to be honest, you will be spending more time on the water than in your hotel room anyways ;)

Studios

The spacious studios offer space for 3-4 people and are, just like the rest of the accommodation, designed and furnished in an individual surfer style. The studios are equipped with a private bathroom, living area and small kitchen.

Penthouse

The penthouse is the heart pice of the Kite House. From your private balkony  you enjoy an unique panoramic view. Furthermore the penthouse can accommodate 4 people and is equipped with a kitchenette and a spacious bathroom.

Apartment

Just like the Penthouse, the Apartment is one of the highlights of the kite house. The former owner of the house lived here and the whole apartment is very spacy. Enjoy the stunning 360 view over Santa Maria and the Kite Beach.  On top of that you will find more than enough space for 3 to 4 people, a mini safe, a fan, a kitchenette and a huge bathroom.

Activities that you can book on site (not included in the price)

Surfing

If you already know the waves around Sal, why not just leave your kite at home and try out the waves without the wind.

SUP – Stand Up Paddle

The different spots around Sal with smaller waves and shallow water are perfect for SUP.

Diving

There are several diving schools in Santa Maria, which can take you on diving trips to bring you a little closer to the underwater world.

Deep-Sea Fishing

In case you’re bringing along hunters and gatherers, there are fishing trips available for trolling and bottom-fishing all around Sal. If you want you can catch your dinner yourself!

Sailing

Whether you’re looking for a catamaran or a traditional sailboat, sailing is a good change from kitesurfing and a great alternative for non kitesurfers. You can enjoy a relaxing time on the water especially tranquil on the light breeze days. Don’t forget your swimming suits!

Island Tours

If you’ve had enough wind, water and waves, you can take a day tour on the island with the main mode of transportation, aluguer taxi.

Quad-Tours

On the southern part of the island, you’ll have the opportunity to discover the most remote corners of the island on a quad-tour.

General Information

The island Sal and the locals

The Cape Verde islands were accidentally discovered by Portuguese seafarer back in 1500. Cabo Verde means : the islands of the green cape. But with „green cape“ they mean todays Senegal, of which the islands belonged. This explains why the islands aren’r really green, which would have justified their name.
The republic of Cape Verde consists of 15 islands that are partly occupied, partly not. They are the most southern archipelago of the North-african group of islands. They emerged out of volcanic activities and can be divided into Sotavento (turning their back to the wind) and Barlavento (facing the wind) islands.

Through the fusion between different cultures and languages of European and African island habitants, an own lifestyle and dialect, called Creole, evolved. The Cape Verdeans developed their own identity through this.

Sal: „the island of salt“ belongs of course to the Barlavento-islands and is located at the north east border of the archipelago. The name came up when back in the 17th century the island got occupied for salt extraction. Stress and rush is something Cape Verdeans don’t know and you’ll get to hear „não problema“ and „um momeno“ often. The saying: „The European people have the watches and the African people have the time“ is absolutely suited to Cape Verde. Get into this relaxed atmosphere of the islander. Explore and enjoy the flair that comes along with this relaxed attitude of the locals.

Gastronomy

You’re absolutely tuckered out from all the kitesurfing, surfing, diving, sailing…but for some food you’d still be up for? No problem, the Cape Verdian kitchen lures with tasty and rustic food.
In Sal all the fish lovers are going to get their money’s worth of tuna, mackerels, squid, langoustine, shells, crabs – just to name a few. They get cooked, grilled or fried and served freshly all over the island. But don’t worry also for those who like meat and vegetable slightly more, they will gewt something to eat.
