Kitesurf Zanzibar – Impressions of a kite instructor

This is a blog post written by Guillaume, our kite instructor in the KiteWorldWide Kite Center Zanzibar / Jambiani: It’s been almost two months I left Jambiani village, Zanzibar. Its been a wonderful time, full of surprises, unbelievable colours and great wind conditions. From the very end of december to early march, the steady wind from north-east has blown nicely. The great lagoon face to Red Monkey Lodge has been one of the most enjoyable places to teach kiteboarding. I have many memories from this time. Here are some photos I took or students have sent me recently. [singlepic id=1136 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1156 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1148 w=400 h=300 ] [singlepic id=1150 w=400 h=300] Jambiani for kitesurfing is just so nice. There is a beautiful sandbank in front of the lodge that becomes an amazing playground at mid tides. Its also the place to ride near by, to keep safe. Flat water can be choppy at 25 knots of course;  swell and braking waves by the reef. [singlepic id=1158 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1157 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1132 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1173 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1174 w=400 h=300] Even if the lagoon is mostly sand bottomed I recommend strongly to bring booties to walk all around the spot with no stress. There are some soft rocks and sea urchins by the beach that we don’t see with high tides. Safety and hazards : Most important: the TIDE. High tide Sessions are only recommended for experienced kitesurfers. (1,80M deep, little space on the beach to launch and land safely) otherwise its all good. Just check your watch AND tides schedule at the lodge. This sport is pretty new here in the village life. Kids come with big smiles along the shore, run to you and ask for carrying your board for awhile. They are very aware of the wind, they build more and more their own kites or boats to play by the shore. The kite school offer the local kids an opportunity to taste the magic of kite flying by organising sessions with our kite assistants and instructors. Priceless moments. [singlepic id=1172 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1170 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1164w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1153 w=400 h=300] [singlepic id=1138w=400 h=300] The beach and the sea belong to everyone here. It is such an incredible feeling to share a beautiful place like this and the atmosphere that goes with it. See you there!
