The Kenya Cup 2011 in Diani Beach was an awesome experience. On the two days 28-29.12 are there 7 National Keny Cups! This event is the local Kenya scene and offers the opportunity to chat with people and perhaps even serve as a stepping stone for the international contest scene. The event was sponsored amongst others b KiteWorldWide. The revenue from entry fees and the after party contest went towards the Colobus Conservation Trust Funds, which is dedicated to protect the rare colobus monkeys on the Kenyan coast.
Kenyan locals did not participate in the freestyle contest, but there were riders from all different countries: England, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Germany! For KiteWorldWide started Philipp Mohr (KiteWorldWide lodge Kenya head teacher) and Markus Treuheit (guest).
The freestyle elimination on 28.12 should be discharged which unfortunately, and literraly, fell into the water due to the unusual weather conditions, namely clouds and rain. The second day, however, did compensate with the sun and constant Kasakazi wind at 20-25 knots! The contest was held in the Chao system, and after the man exciting heats became one of the favorites of the contest: Riccardo Fortunato (Diani Local) of a PKRA Worldcup listed 56, Xan Woods a local Kenyan from Watamu and winner of last year’s Kenya Cup and Philip Mohr, who went to KiteWorldWide Lodge Kenya to race! These three drivers fought a long 12-minute final heat with spectacular delights and many tricks. Xan Woods shone with his new stylish school, he landed high-tech tricks such as Backmobes & KGB, Riccardo Fortunato had, as a Diani local, the crowd on his side and was loudly cheered for, which clearly motivated him to play up his trick repertoire. Philip tried to win the judges over with powerful and high wakestyle F16 kite loops, but this had an impact only on the audience. And so Xan Woods won followed by Riccardo Fortunato and third place went to Philip.
At the After Contest Party, people celebrated at the Forty Thieves Beach Bar, where the entire Kenya kite scene came together.
We invite you to join our next Kenya Cup Tour Stop, in August in Che Chale which is in the northern part of Kenya.
