The hype around wave kite surfing is really just getting started. 2011 was the first year that the KSP – a competition world cup tour devoted completely to wave kitesurfing – with the finals being held on Sal. We want to give you a closer look at wave kitesurfing on Sal, since you can progress much faster with a few tips and tricks and kitesurfing in the waves is much safer under guidance.

Together with THE wave kitesurfer and wave world champion Mitu Monteiro we have set up a program especially for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers who want to kitesurf on waves for real.

The kitecenter of Mitu and his buddy Djo is located right at Kitebeach, the perfect spot for wavekite beginners. The center used to be a small beach shag but since this year there is a really stylish, fully equipped kitecenter including a nice beach bar.

We are offering one-week long kitesurf camps with Mitu Monteiro, including five days of intensive wave training and spot guiding. Mitu will personally be in charge of your progress and learning success in the waves and take you to those secret spots hidden for the “normal” kitesurfer.

Since numbers for the camp are limited (8 kitesurfers), we advise that you book early. There are currently two clinics planned each time in January, February, March and April.

For those of you who want to give it a try and generally feel comfortable on a twin tip, but don´t want to buy a waveboard just yet, we offer a wave basic package for all wave newcomers. Of course there are a lot more travel packages for beginners and advanced kitesurfers as well as for your non-kiting companion. Just have a look at our general Cape Verde site to find your perfect combination.

Dates and schedule of the Wave Clinics

Wave clinic schedule

Day 1

The night before your first Wave Clinic Day, you’ll meet up with Mitu and the rest of the group at a nice get-together at a beach bar. You’ll get to know Mitu and have the time and opportunity to discuss the plan for the rest of the week and chat about kitesurfing.

Day 2

On the first day, you’ll head to the Kite Beach and get some of your first tips from the wave pro on how to use the board. Mitu will also check out how good you are on your board to determine which spots to take you to.

Day 3-6

Depending on the wind, swell, your ability and personal wishes, Mitu will take you to the secret spots on the island in an all-terrain pickup. Just so you know: no one knows their way around here as well as Mitu!

Throughout the week, you’ll have a great dinner with typical local specialties and lots of fish (other alternatives also possible) in a sweet beach restaurant (not including drinks). This is a beach BBQ. Your meal, the long day of kitesurfing and the caipis at the beach bar afterwards will tire you out and let you dream about your next kitesurfing day on the waves.

You can also plan stays before and after your wave kite Camp, herefor we gladly organize the accommodation and everything else needed.

The camp includes one week at the kite apartment in a double room, 5-day intensive wave kitesurfing training with Mitu, F-One Wave Board test, transportation to and from the airport, spot guiding and transportation to the wave spots on the island during the 5 days, beach barbeque, F-One Kite test option, welcome get together and briefing for the week;)

Kitesurf and spots on Sal

The choices of kitesurfing spots are astounding if you know where to go.

In the western part of the island you can find numerous wavespots.

In the bay of Baia da Murdeira you´ll find the spots Calhita Funda, Rife and Praia da Canoa. Baia de Joaquim Petinha is another spot to kitesurf in the waves.

For the more adventurous, there are world-class wave spots – most of all, the waves at Ponta Preta as you may know from the tons of videos. The waves here are very fast and have been known to have wave faces up to eight meters on big days. Those who doesn’t feel fit enough for the waves in Ponta Preta, should still check out this spot and watch the pros ripping the waves.

There are spots with side-onshore wind and small wind waves for intermediate kiters on the eastern, windward side of the island. This is also where you’ll find the so-called Kite Beach where there is currently a small wooden structure like a beach bar. At the moment, there are license procedures being conducted for this beach for a modern kitesurf center by Mitu and Djo with a new beach bar and everything else of infrastructure you would need. Whether or not the political cogs turn fast enough for this to come true by next season is another question, so no good predictions about Kite Center Sal can be made.

Santa Maria in the south is a great beginner cove with flat water, so even freestyle kitesurfers get their money’s worth. The western part of Santa Maria is also where Mitu and Djo’s professional kitesurf school is located. There you’ll find a large assortment of new F-One kite equipment. On the southwestern corner of the bay, there is also an excellent wave spot which is only recommended for those who can really kitesurf due to the offshore wind.

It´s Mitu’s secret to which of these spots he will take you.

Dates 2015

January: 17.01.-21.01.
February: 08.02.-12.02.
March: 07.03.-11.03. and 14.03.-18.03.

Caution: The spots we use during the advanced clinics are only for advanced kitesurfers. You should already be able to kitesurf upwind and do a quick and controlled relauch of the kite. Accomodations on Sal / Cape Verde

On Cape Verde we are offering you the wave camps as a package, either with the 2011 finished KiteWorldWide apartments or the brand new Beach Club Sal.

The wave camp is a all-round, worry-free package! You will not be left alone, and already at the airport one of Mitu’s staff is awaiting you to bring you to your accommodation. On the way you’ll get first impressions of the island and in the evening a nice get-together establishes the first contacts with the rest of the participants and Mitu himself.

Beach Club Sal

A long period of waiting ends with the opening of this project. An accommodation right in the centre of Santa Maria directly on the beach with a pool and a relaxed beach bar. Built by kitersurfers for kitesurfers.

The Pousada which was completed in January 2012 hosts only five rooms and an integrated beach bar. The rooms are arranged fashionable and rustic at once. You feel like being on a sailing boat because of the use of natural wood all over. From the rooftop – terrace you have a spectacular view over the whole beach of Santa Maria.

An extensive breakfast buffet with tea, coffee, bread and rolls, eggs, omellete, bacon, yoghurt and fruits is already included.

Of course you would not miss anything here:

All rooms are equipped with an own marble flagged bathroom with warm water shower/WC, TV, ventilator, fridge, air condition (additional charge) and comfortable double beds.

The rooms on the first floor and one of the rooms on the ground floor impress with their clear view to the beach and a terrace.

One of the rooms on the ground floor is located in the backend of the pousada and has no view onto the beach (but is therefore a bit cheaper).

One of the rooms is meant for up to four persons, two rooms for up to three persons and one for up to two persons.

KiteWorldWide Apartments Cape Verde/ Sal / Sanata Maria

The KiteWorldWide apartments are located centrally and at the same time only a stone throw away from the beautiful sand beach of Santa Maria. The village center with its numerous bars, restaurants and shops are within walking distance.

The apartments are located in a small, nice housing complex with garden and a few shops. All the apartments have a kitchenette with fridge, cooker and oven. Of course you will have a balcony and a fully equipped bathroom.

Bedlinen, towels and final cleaning are included in the price as well as the costs for water and electricity.

Depending on with how many people you will travel, you will get an apartment with one (for two persons) or two (for more than two persons) separate sleeping rooms.

Of course we also offer other course packages for beginners and intermediate kitesurfers on Cape Verde. You will find more information about our other packages on our general Cape Verde site.

Alternative Activities

Around the Wave Clinic there is a lot to experience and to explore on Sal. You can go surfing, stand-up paddling (SUP), diving, deep-sea fishing, sailing, island tours or quad tours. For more information click here.

Gastronomy on Sal

You’re completely worn out from kitesurfing, surfing, diving, sailing… but you still have enough energy to go out to eat? No problem, because the Cape Verdian kitchen is absolutely delicious.

Fish-lovers  will be right at home. Tuna, mackerel, squid, oysters, crayfish, and shrimp, just to name a few, are served boiled, grilled or fried everywhere on the island. But don’t worry! Meat lovers and vegetarians won’t be disappointed, either.
