Cabo Verde - Sal

Kite Holidays to Sal / Cape Verde

For GERMAN Version click here!

A few weeks after we received an e-mail from Mitu Monteiro himself we were on an island of unbounded kite surfing opportunities.

The great weather all year long and wind from December to May were a good start. The kite spots on Sal have something for everyone: the Kite Beach with side-onshore wind and small wind waves. Santa Maria Beach with fairly well conditions for beginners – though not completely perfect, due to water depth – and freestylers. For the more adventurous, there are world-class wave spots (most of all, the waves at Ponta Preta as you may know from the tons of videos circulating around).

There is nearly no better place to learn wave kiting than Cape Verde. That´s why we put together an extensive range of courses which provides a fitting course for everyone.

For all intermediate and advanced kite surfers we have the wave kite basic package. This package includes two hours of wave kite orientation, in which you will learn the most important things for beginning with wave kite surfing. In addition you will get the wave board rental for one week.

For all the the advanced and pro kiters who want to kite on waves for real we have the Wave Clinics with spotguiding and training with Mitu Monteiro personally.

We have also arranged an array of other activities for you to meet other kiters and get a feel for real life in cape Verde. You´ll go to a rockin´beach bar one night and an awesome beach barbeque another.

Beautiful accommodations bring the whole package together and there is something for everyone – economic, sporting equipment-friendly flights from everywhere in Germany. In just six hours, you´ll be at the very heart of the wave kite world.

Kitesurf and Kitespot Info Cape Verde / Sal

The choices of kitespots are astounding if you know where to go.

There are spots with side-onshore wind and small wind waves for intermediate kiters on the eastern, windward side of the island.  This is also where you’ll find the so-called Kite Beach where there is currently a small wooden structure like a beach bar. At the moment, there are license procedures being conducted for this beach for a modern kite station by Mitu and Djo with a good beach bar and everything else you need. Whether or not the political cogs turn fast enough for this to come true by next season is another question, so no good predictions about Kite Center Sal can be made.

Santa Maria in the south is a great beginner cove with flat water, so even freestyle kiters get their money’s worth. The western part of Santa Maris is also where Mitu and Djo’s professional kite school is located. This is also the only place to kite in the bay of Santa Maria because the wind comes in side-shore to side-onshore.

On the western corner of the bay, there is also an excellent wave spot which is only recommended for those who can really kite surf due to the offshore wind. For those who are not brave enough to go out all the way into the wave of Ponta Preta in the western part of the island, you should still check out this spot and watch other kiters rip through the waves.

You’ll receive a two hour-long wave kite orientation which will provide you with the most important tips to make your transition as smooth as possible. Of course, you will also have the choice of going with or without straps for your first time, but we recommend going strapless to get the “true” wave feeling.

Beginner Kite Course

Along with the options for intermediate and advanced kiters, beginners can also take advantage of the conditions on Sal. Depending on the weather, beginner kite courses are offered at Santa Maria or the Kite Beach (transportation on course days included). On the western side of Santa Maria, the wind blows onshore and, as opposed to other area, at a good speed. This is where Mitu & Djo’s kite station is located where beginner courses are taught. To guarantee progress right from the very beginning, we offer 12 hour (4-5 day) kite courses.

The evening program (beach BBQ and get together) is, of course, also included.

Refresher Kite Course

For those of you who have had a kite course, but don’t feel comfortable just yet, there is a 6-hour refresh course.

Just like the beginner course, this course is offered in Santa Maria or at the Kite Beach depending on weather conditions (transportation on course days incl.).

Kite Rental

You will of course have the option of renting your kite equipment on Sal. All equipment is F-One from the current season. You’ll also have the opportunity to try out twin tips and wave boards. Please note that you must be able to kite upwind to rent equipment.

Accomodation for kitesurfers on Sal

On Cape Verde we are offering you the in 2011 finished KiteWorldWide apartments or the brand new Beach Club Sal in combination with different kite services.

With us you are not only booking flight and accommodation and left alone afterwards. The package always includes a beach barbeque and  get together at the beach bar. In addition you will receive the transportation from and to the airport, which will be done by Mitu`s staff – therefore you will get actual kite information first hand already on your way to the hotel.

Just choose the right package for you depending on your kite surfing level and your expectations.

BEACH CLUB SAL

A long period of waiting ends with the opening of this project. An accommodation right in the centre of Santa Maria directly on the beach with a pool and a relaxed beach bar. Built by kitersurfers  for kitesurfers.

The Pousada which was completed in January 2012 hosts only five rooms and an integrated beach bar.

The rooms are arranged fashionable and rustic at once. You feel like being on a sailing ship because of the use of natural wood all over.

From the rooftop – terrace you have a spectacular view over the whole beach of Santa Maria.

The rooms on the first floor and one of the rooms on the ground floor impress with their clear view to the beach and a terrace.

One of the rooms on the ground floor is located in the backend of the pousada and has no view onto the beach (but is therefore a bit cheaper).

One of the rooms is meant for up to four persons, two rooms for up to three persons and one for up to two persons.

Other activities

Here we would like to give you a short run-through of other local activities. The main attraction on the island is definitely kite surfing, but Sal has more to offer.

Surfing
If you know anything about the waves around Sal, you can leave your kite at home and try out the waves without the wind.

SUP – Stand Up Paddle
The different spots around Sal with smaller waves and shallow water are perfect for SUP.

Diving
There are several diving schools in Santa Maria which can take you on diving trips to bring you a little closer to the underwater world.

Deep-Sea Fishing
In case you’re bringing along hunters and gatherers, there are fishing trips available for trolling and bottom-fishing all around Sal, so you can catch your dinner yourself.

Sailing
Whether you’re looking for a catamaran or a traditional sailboat, sailing is a good change from kiting and a real alternative for non-kiters. You can take advantage of your time on the water and use the sometimes light breeze for a sailing trip. Don’t forget your swimming suits!

Island Tours
If you’ve had enough wind, water, and waves, you can take a day tour of the island on the main mode of transportation, aluguer taxi.

Quad-Tours
On the southern part of the island, you’ll have the opportunity to discover the most remote corners of the island on a quad-tour.

Island Sal and its lifestyle

The Island Sal and the People of Cape Verde

Cape Verde was accidentally discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese sailors. Cabo Verde means: “The islands of green capes”. The green cape refers to what is today the Senegal, which was the original name of the whole island group. That also explains why the name fits, although the island itself is not really green.

The Republic of Cape Verde is comprised of 15 inhabited and uninhabited islands. It is the southern-most archipelago of the islands located on the North African coast. The islands were created by volcanic activity and divided into sotavento (islands facing away from the wind) and barlavento (islands facing into the wind).

Due to the mixture of different cultures and languages, both European and African, of island inhabitants, a very distinct way of life and dialect developed on the island which we call “Creole”. The inhabitants of Cape Verde have, thereby, created their own identity.

Sal: “The island of salt”, also belongs to the barlavanto islands and is on the northeastern edge of the archipelago. The island received its name in the 17th century when it was settled for salt production.

Stress and rushing are completely foreign to Cap Verdians and are usually answered with “não problema” or “um momento”. The saying: “The Europeans have clocks and Africans have time” perfectly describes the Cape Verdians. Take on the relaxed manner of the island dwellers. Take advantage of and enjoy the flair of the laid-back disposition of the natives.

Restaurants

You’re completely worn out from kiting, surfing, diving, sailing… but you still have enough energy to go out? No problem, because the Cape Verdian kitchen is absolutely delicious.

Fish-lovers will be right at home. Tuna, mackerel, squid, oysters, crayfish, and shrimp, just to name a few, are served boiled, grilled, or fried everywhere on the island. But don’t worry! Meat lovers and vegetarians won’t be disappointed, either.
